Dead heat for Australia and NZ

Friendly rivalry between Australia and New Zealand raised its
head again at last month's Australasian and Compensation
Health Research Forum with Helen Dougherty, Research Advisor with
the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), NZ, and Dr Janneke
Berecki-Gisolf, Senior Research Fellow of the Monash Injury
Institute (MIRI) being declared joint winners of the Early Career
Investigator Poster Award.
Dr Berecki-Gisolf was presented the award for research that
was likely to have the most impact for her poster assessing the
impact of an ageing workforce on work disability and return to
work. Her research demonstrated that the incidence of
lost-time claims increases with age, as does the time off work per
claim. As the ageing of the workforce is ongoing, the lost-time
claim burden can be expected to increase if policy and practice
remain otherwise unchanged.
These findings highlight the ongoing need for preventative
measures to improve working conditions to reduce the risk of injury
and to address specific injury risks for older workers such as
chronic disease.
Ms Dougherty received the award for translating research into
action for her poster entitled 'Increasing End User Engagement with
Survey Data' which sought to create a more engaging and interactive
way for ACC staff to access customer satisfaction survey data. This
resulted in the development of a web-based tool bringing together
both survey data and administrative data allowing users to
customise the ways they view the information to accommodate their
specific individual needs.
The benefits of the tool were found to be: more timely results;
greater staff reach; single source of survey results; user
friendly; customisable; and highly visual and innovative data
display which is easy to understand.
