ISCRR recently partnered with Comcare to deliver two workshops on preventing and managing vicarious trauma in the workplace, as part of Comcare’s Mental Health Community of Practice. Over 90 participants were involved across Canberra and Melbourne.

ISCRR’s collaboration with Comcare has developed over several years, strengthened by the strong positive response to a Comcare webinar ISCRR presented on the topic. This led to further discussions and, ultimately, a joint proposal to run the workshops.

The sessions delivered by ISCRR’s vicarious trauma expert Carmen Schroder, and Research and Evaluation Lead Dr Sarah Oxford, generated rich discussion, including:

  • strong interest in what constitutes quality support options,
  • how to apply support strategies in a work-from-home context,
  • practical examples of frontline staff developing their own prevention strategies, and,
  • the strengths and weaknesses of mental health first aid in preventing vicarious trauma.

“Workshop offered detailed and practical information as well as good opportunities to hear about application of methods to control vicarious trauma in other workplaces. Well-structured presentation. Thank you for a great workshop.”
